ItCounts is an open source, citizen science crowd-sourcing application to promote gender balance, anytime, anywhere. Count sex ratios, visualize data, share data, and learn from data to make the world a better place.
The right for men and women, girls and boys, to have equal opportunities is a debate that has taken a considerable importance in our century. The lack of gender balance in Science and Technology, Business, Politics, Arts, Medecine has consequences that go far beyond expected in terms of performance, well being, justice, for which many evidence accumulate. Yet, the debate about representation of men and women in society often turns controversial, emotional or restricted to experts, highlighting the need for objective, quantitative, and simple ways of talking about gender balance. By encouraging each citizen to count, analyze, and share their observations about gender ratios around them and learn from data they collect, the ItCounts Project raises awareness about gender bias in an independent and neutral way.
ItCounts is project carried out by WAX Science, a French NPO that promotes science and gender diversity in science by creating and disseminating innovative tools with a fun and offbeat tone. It was invented and designed by WAX Science (wax-science.org) and developed by SimplX (simplx.fr)
